Investment Management

Banyan Partners is a SEC Registered Investment Advisor providing individuals and institutions personalized investment portfolio management services tailored to meet our client’s unique financial objectives.

We work closely with our clients to develop the appropriate asset allocations for your portfolio based upon your specific tolerance to risk, your individual tax situation, and your need for liquidity. We apply our portfolio construction only after a careful discussion centered on your investment objectives and your desire for income.

This approach ensures that your investment portfolio is properly designed to address your specific individual needs.

Individual Securities

We initially use a fundamental approach to our sector and industry research providing us with a blueprint for constructing a sound equity allocation within the portfolio.

Equity

Through our “Opportunistic” Investment Process, we custom create investment portfolios with very specific attributes and characteristics. Strategies that Banyan Partners portfolio managers are currently implementing include:

Core Equity — equity portfolios that display growth attributes superior to their industry peer group, sector, and the overall market when Growth is in vogue. While we want to own robust, market-leading companies with demonstrated top and bottom line growth, we do not want to “overpay” for this growth, so we apply careful attention to valuation. Our approach incorporates a Value strategy when the market cycle is favorable, with portfolio construction focused on undervalued, overlooked opportunities. A catalyst to drive share price appreciation is critical to insure against “dead money” ownership.

Equity Income — an equity portfolio that consists of dividend paying stocks, master limited partnerships, and select real estate investment trusts. This portfolio is constructed to pay current income in the form of dividends at a rate of over twice the S&P 500 index (currently above 4%), while not sacrificing long-term capital appreciation. Another aspect is to identify companies that not only pay an attractive current yield, but have also demonstrated the ability to raise their dividends over time so that the income generated will grow at a rate in excess of the expected rate of inflation.

Hedged Equity — a tactical equity portfolio strategy is considered the most customized in that it will hold fewer stocks and tends to concentrate Banyan’s best ideas in a focused, highly sector specific manner. This portfolio will use both listed call and put options to generate excess returns opportunistically and to hedge against potential downside risk in certain securities. This portfolio type will naturally have the highest “beta” to the broad market due to its concentrated portfolio construction.

Each of our customized equity portfolios own large, mid, and small-cap companies, so we are not constrained by size. The portfolios also have significant exposure to foreign markets, through ADRs foreign and multinational corporations.

Due to our specific style of trading, we maintain a strong sell discipline, often employing stops or hedges within most portfolios. A stock may be sold for fundamental or technical reasons, to maintain sector weightings or simply, if a more attractive opportunity exists elsewhere in the market.

Fixed Income

As with our Equity Portfolios, each Bond Portfolio is highly strategic and customized – depending on each individual’s income needs, level of risk tolerance, and tax situation (marginal tax rate). Banyan manages custom bond portfolios using individual securities, in order to maximize yield and to minimize both interest rate and credit risk. We have significant experience constructing fixed income portfolios using treasuries, agencies, municipals, corporates, convertibles, and preferreds.

Covered Call Writing and Selected Option Strategies

For selected clients, Banyan can implement a strategic portfolio using hedging and alternative investment strategies such as writing covered calls, selling puts, and other specific uses of listed options. These portfolio strategies may be used exclusively or in conjunction with equity portfolios to enhance returns, add income, or hedge the portfolio during appropriate times of increased or decreased market volatility.

Mutual Funds and ETFs

Banyan may employ or combine active asset allocation with the use of no-load Mutual Funds or passively managed Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in order to help achieve a client’s investment return objectives. In some cases, these investment options may offer our clients a tax-efficient and low-risk way to gain specific broad market or sector exposure.

We apply a strategic approach to identifying market and sector trends when using mutual funds or ETFs. We will also use these investment vehicles, when appropriate, to establish hedges or short positions to reduce risk or enhance return within the portfolio.
